Mt. Hiei Azelea Viewing Hike

Enjoy beautiful wild azeleas in full bloom on this one-day hike on Saturday 27th April.

Location: Mt. Hiei in Kyoto 　

Meeting place and time: JR Hieizan Sakamoto station @ 9:30 a.m.

(You may take the following JR Rapid Express either from Sannomiya, Ashiya or Osaka to Hieizan Sakamoto station.)

JR Sannomiya @ 8:20 a.m.

JR Ashiya @ 8:29 a.m.

↓

JR Osaka @ 8:45 a.m.

↓

JR Hieizan Sakamoto @ 9:30 a.m.  

Hiking Plans:

We will start our hike from JR. Sakamoto station overlooking the western shore line of Lake Biwa. Passing through some narrow and winding streets of Sakamoto township, we will reach the entrance of Mt. Hiei “Omote Sandou” hiking trail. It’s a short and easy hike through dense forest of cedar trees and we expect to reach the summit before noon. We will have lunch at the renowned “Azelea Garden.” After lunch, we will take Eizan Cable Car for our descent to Yase. We will then transfer to Eizan Railway which would take us back to Keihan Demachi Yanagi. From Demachi Yanagi, you may take either Keihan Line back to Osaka (for those participants whose residences are located along Keihan Line), or get off at Gion Shijou station and enjoy a little stroll before making the final transfer to Hankyu Kyoto Line.

If we have time, we may stop by at a café in Gion and have a few drinks before leaving Kyoto.   

Requirements/What to bring: Hiking attire, rain wear, head light (just in case), lunch, snack, and water. (There is a convenience store located just outside JR. Sakamoto Station)  Hiking boots are recommended but not mandatory as it is a very easy and moderate hike.
