What to bring on a hike
Every hiking trip is different depending on the terrain and weather conditions but as a general guide you should bring the following:
Essential things you should always carry on any type of hike and in any season are:
- Rain gear
- Headlamp
- Map and Compass
- Hiking Boots
- Lots of food and drink
You never know when a short day hike may become an overnight stay!!
Day Trip
- backpack with rain cover
- hiking trousers (NOT jeans)
- hiking boots
- t-shirt (NOT cotton)
- fleece
- waterproof jacket and over
- trousers
- hat
- gloves
- sun protection – sunscreen and sunglasses and lip balm
- lots of food and drink
- headlamp
- Headlamp/spare batteries (Essential to carry on all hikes). Please be aware that batteries do not last as long in cold weather.
- map and compass
- onsen kit (towel, tooth brash, under wear change, cosmetic)
- money
- plastic bags for wet items and rubbish
- At least one member in the group should bring a first aid kit. We recommend that you carry your own first aid kit in case you get separated from the group.
Overnight Trip
- large sturdy pack with rain cover
- hiking trousers (NOT jeans)
- hiking boots
- t-shirt (NOT cotton)
- fleece
- waterproof jacket and over
- trousers
- underwear change, extra socks
- thermal underwear
- change of clothes
- sleeping bag
- sleeping mat
- tent, if camping
- hat
- gloves
- gaiters
- sun protection – sunscreen and sunglasses
- lots of food and drink
- gas stove
- cup, bowl, utensils
- headlamp and spare batteries
- map and compass
- toiletries
- onsen kit
- money
- plastic bags for wet items and rubbish
- At least one member in the group should bring a first aid kit and emergency blanket. We recommend that you carry your own first aid kit in case you get separated from the group
