April, 10th | Saturday | Special Events *
Here are some IMPORTANT CHANGES and information about the Hanami event. If you signed up, please read them carefully.
(1) The hike. Hikers meet at KYOTO HIGASHIYAMA station (directly at the ticket gates) and NOT at Sanjo. The hikers will LEAVE AT 10AM SHARP. So come 5 minutes earlier, we will not wait. The correct name of the station is HIGASHIYAMA(KYOTO) in English (in case you search for it on the hyperdia website).
(2) The non-hikers will meet Mana at Keihan Hama-Otsu station at 2pm to go to the Hanami park. Due to temple regulations, we will have the picnic at Nagara-koen and NOT Miidera. The name of the station is HAMAOTSU in English (for hyperdia).
(3) The picnic. It will be a pot luck event and not a barbecue, so please bring one dish each. We will have a stove in case you need this. Mana and Mari can pick up some stuff at Higashiyama station and take it directly to the hanami spot. with some help from Mari-san. Try and bring something light, so that you can carry it with you on the hike. It would be helpful if you could let Mana know what you will be bringing with you and if you want them to carry it to the hanami place.
Here are phone numbers in case you have to contact us on Saturday:
Mana 080-6546-7384
Dominikus 080-3823-5832
Sorry for the changes.

Original posting: Hanami season is coming!
We want to enjoy the beautiful cherry blossoms with a short hike and a picnic/barbecue afterwards. This event will include the IOC general meeting for April 2010 as well!
The plan:
Hikers meet at Sanjo Keihan (in front of the Book-Off Store on the North-East corner of Sanjo-Kawabata, Kyoto) at 10am. We will walk to the Southern end of the philosopher's path, enjoy the (crowded) walk to Ginkakuji and hike up Daimonji. From there, we will descend to Yamashina and hop on the train (Kosei line) to Otsu-kyo.
The picnic/barbecue will take place in the Miidera park in Otsu. It would be great to have one car going there before noon to reserve a spot for all of us. Parking is easy at the huge parking space close to Keihan and JR station. The hikers will probably arrive between 1pm and 2pm.
What to bring?
- reasonable shoes and clothes for the hike
- bowl, cup, fork/knife/chopsticks/etc for the picnic
- your own drinks for the picnic and food to share; a barbecue set will be provided, so don't forget your meat (or veggies) to grill
IOC general meeting: will be held at the barbecue, so make sure to be there until 2pm.
Signup: until April 4th, 11pm
Leader : Mana Yamaguchi (mana.yamaguchi) | send e-mail
Co-leader : Dominikus Heinzeller (dominikus) | send e-mail
Meet :
Hikers: shortly before 10am at the ticket gates of Kyoto Higashiyama.
Non-hikers: 2pm at Keihan Hama-Otsu.
Cost :
Your transporation to Higashiyama (or Hama-Otsu) plus the way back from Hama-Otsu
