Yatsu-ga-take mountain range - March 21st-22nd

Hi there,

the Yatsu-ga-dake mountain range is a common place for winter mountaineering, snow shoeing, cross-country/back-country skiing etc.

We are organizing a two-day trip to enjoy the last bits of winter and snow before Hanami season. The overall plan is as follows:

We will stay at the Mugikusa Huette (http://www.mugikusa.com/hutte.html) which lies next to the Merchen Highway (road no. 299, traversing the Yatsu-ga-take range) at about 2000m altitude. The hut rents equipment of all kind, cross-country skis, snowshoes, ... - even telemark skis! It gives access to both the Northern (Chausu-san, Shimakare-san) and the Southern peaks (Naka-san, Tengu-dake, ...) on the ridge.

Departing from either Kansai area or Kawaguchiko (see below), we will arrive on March 21st (Sunday) morning and enjoy the rest of the day with snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and alike. On March 22nd (Monday), the brave among us will attempt an early start to climb Southwards towards Nishi-Tengu-dake and to enjoy sunrise - and hopefully splendid views of Fuji-san! After returning to the hut, we will drive back home to Kansai on Monday afternoon/evening (by the way, Monday 22nd is public holiday).

Accommodation: the Mugikusa Huette will serve us dinner on the 21st and breakfast on the 22nd (might be skipped for the early morning climbers). Thus, you have to bring lunch for 21st and 22nd by yourself (plus snack food and eventually breakfast on the 22nd). The fee for the hut lies between 7000 and 10000JPY for one night including the two meals.

Transportation: one car will leave from Kansai area on Sunday very early morning, allowing four people to come (Mana + 3 more). A second car will leave from Kawaguchi-ko (Dominikus and his friend from Germany) with the possibility to pick up two more people at Chino station. Both cars will return to Kansai area on the evening of the 22nd.

Equipment: you will need warm clothes suitable for winter sports. Equipment that cannot be rented from IOC (try IOC for snowshoes first) can be borrowed from Mugikusa Huette - but we need to know about that beforehand. People willing to get up early for the Sunrise climb should also have headlights and a thermos for warm tea/coffee, as well as (light) crampons and hiking poles - just in case. If you are concerned about the equipment - we will most likely be able to find a solution if you inform us well enough beforehand.

Signup: we can take a maximum of eight people due to transportation (two cars) and hut reservations. The deadline for signing up is Sunday, March 14th, 10pm. No cancellation after the deadline.

In case you have questions, please do not hesitate to ask!
